That one week has changed my life forever. My employer chose me and a fellow co-worker to help build two homes alongside Bridges to Community Canada in Sasle, Nicaragua. Throughout the entire trip I felt welcomed, safe and inspired. By building homes for these Nicaraguan families… I not only changed their lives, but they changed mine in such a beautiful way. I am more grateful, patient, and a much more well-rounded person now.
I went to Nicaragua to help the poor people …. turns out they are some of the richest people in the world and they filled my heart almost to the point of bursting.

It is clear that every detail has been considered. I was extremely impressed by how well run the trip was from start to finish. Consideration was clearly given to how the trip can be made as fun and comfortable as possible while experiencing life in Nicaragua. It was great to experience such a wonderful country and learn about the complex situations that effect it.
Before heading out and on the planning stages, I was feeling close to burn out. My job, life, etc. was such that I didn’t even think I could contribute or raise the money or even sign up on the site… Today, I feel renewed and rejuvenated. No other 1 week holiday be it an all-inclusive in Cuba or a mountain view vista in BC could have done for my mind and spirit what this short week has. I am grateful to all involved.
Anytime someone asked how the trip was, I would pause and then say “If I could smoosh together all the words that mean amazing, I still don’t think it would be enough”. For years I’ve talked about going on this trip and I’m so beyond happy and grateful that I did. I will forever be proud of what we accomplished, the relationships I’ve made and the memories I have.
“The trip was absolutely wonderful. I’m so thankful I got to go with such an amazing group of people. It was definitely an emotional time, but I’m missing it so much already. The people of Jinotega and Sasle were so kind and genuine and you could honestly feel their love when you were with them. I definitely surprised myself a lot and this trip is going to change a lot for me in terms of my outlook on life and even what I do with my life, and I’m so thankful for that.”
What an amazing, rewarding and memorable experience! The words that rise up in my heart as I reminisce about our trip are: humble, compassion, honour, hardworking, adventure, teamwork, strength, endurance, challenging, fun, memorable, serve, family, laughter and love.
This trip was everything I had hoped it would be…. As expected, I experienced numerous emotions on this trip and you can’t help but re-evaluate certain aspects of your life. I obviously felt extreme gratitude for everything that I have and everything Canada has afforded me but I also felt that the Nicaraguan people have something that we have lost a bit of in Canada – the ability to enjoy life without material items , and the joy of just being together.
Though the building process was physically straining, the amount of gratitude and happiness that we received outweighed our hardships. I was genuinely amazed at the families’ humbleness. Despite having so little, they can appreciate what they have, while still enjoying life. This trip opened my eyes, and made me appreciate all the amenities that we continuously take for granted.
Our mandate to build 2 homes became much more than that, it was truly about changing lives. Our families were given the opportunity to not only have a better standard of living, but it seems they also had a renewed confidence and pride. They would now have a four walls, a solid roof, and no open fires in the kitchen.
“This has been something I have always wanted to do so when the opportunity came by I was indeed humbled by it. It became one of the most remarkable experience of my life. The trip gave me a different perspective on how we can make a positive impact on those around us. I was motivated by the changes I could make however small that impacted the lives of the families.”
